Quality is going down, down, down...
Just like the other reviewers, I agree the construction quality of the NB's has fallen dramatically. I got these 608V3's to replace 608's I had that served me well for almost two years, and initially was quite happy with them. I guess I still am, they feel pretty good - my other doggies were worn ragged. But the second time I put these on, the shoe lace loop popped right off from the stitching. Rather than add $10 more dollars to the price of the shoes by returning them, I used a leather hole-punch to put an eyelet where the slit for the shoe-lace loop is cut out already, and snipped off the ~1" of useless blue strap hanging in the tongue that no longer would be holding laces. You can't tell from a distance, and the hole is pretty much like the other lace holes, so I guess it'll work. But it was kind of a disappointing surprise to start lacing up my sneakers for a workout, and 'pop'!

Quality has nosedived...
I've been wearing the 608's for years... The first pair I purchased fit me well and I became a fan of the shoe... Then the V2 came out Wow! was that a step down... I just received my first and unfortunately my last pair of the new V3's! The quality has tanked the "toe box" has been significantly reduced which means a size 12 4E no longer fits and I would have to go to a 12.5 to get "justice" for my toes...(it turns out another prior reviewer stated this in his/her review however I didn't catch that until after I had ordered) I get the feeling that New Balance has let the bean counters take over their management as they seem more interested in squeezing every penny they can out of their manufacturing costs... Unfortunately that comes at the expense of product quality in terms of fit and finish... and that has cost them 1 long term customer...

New Balance once had a very good reputation for making quality athletic shoes that provided solid support and were well-constructed. I have owned many pairs of their gym shoes through the years. The old version of the 608 in particular was a very good shoe. The shoe shape was well-proportioned (wider in the forefoot where most feet tend to widen), the materials were good, the support was almost unmatched in this price point, and the durability was exceptional. Well, sadly this is no more. I tried on a pair of these and was horribly disappointed. The shoe is shaped like an oval now, not conforming at all to the shape of my feet. The materials seems poor, the uppers stiff and not very breathable (the old 608s were made from soft, comfortable leather). The sole is completely flat and seems thin, not very cushioned. The toe box is short yet very high (how many feet are shaped like that??). I couldn't even walk around the store comfortably when I tried them on! What has...
